Mike Walton

Mike lives in Whitehorse, Yukon on the traditional lands of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. With over 35 years of experience working with municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal protected areas systems across Canada, the forest industry, environmental assessment, tourism, and community based economic development, Mike brings expertise in governance, power-sharing arrangements, and co-management to historic treaties, modern treaties, and unceded territory.

Informing both strategic analysis and corporate policy development, Mike has extensive experience with Indigenous ways of knowing, protecting the environment, and improving the social and economic well-being of rural and remote communities.

Mike has a diploma in Economic Development from the University of Waterloo, an Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Outdoor Recreation from Lakehead University, a M.Sc from Slippery Rock University, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from the University of Victoria. Mike is an adjunct professor at Lakehead University and serves as a Director on various community and non-profit Boards.
